I'm planning on building some kitchen cabinets. I was at my brother's house over the weekend and noticed the bottoms of his cabinets are about 1/8" lower than the faceframe. In my old cabinets it's flush. Any reason for the difference or just preference?

Just easier/quicker to make. Case doesn't need to be square. However, they get beat up too, when you slide dishes out, etc.

In my opinion it's just sloppy work (spelled "production")

A lot easier, no need for precision!

But if it still holds the dishes, pots, pans and cheerios -- what's the problem!

Ditto for 3/8 inch overlay doors on 50 year old cabinets (mine!) and the newer full overlay doors on cabinets without face frames.

Also, stapled drawer fronts, chip board cases, etc., etc., etc.

It's cabinetry , not furniture!

The lip also makes it easier for crap to get stuck behind the lip.

But stuff doesn't roll out when you open the door.

My husband has built kitchen cabinet at our old home and
is in the process of building new ones for our current home.
In both instances he has built the bottom shelf about 1/16" lower
intentionally. I always put linoleum under the kitchen sink and on
the lower (floor) shelves. It makes cleaning super easy. On the
upper cabinets I line the bottom shelves with shelf liner. Neither
type of shelf liner gets caught or sticks up. On the lower cabinets,
I place double stick carpet tape about 1/8' from the face across the
front and the linoleum lasts for years (10 at the last house).

But stuff doesn't roll out when you open the door.If the cabinet is level, stuff doesn't roll out.

"But stuff doesn't roll out when you open the door."

Yeah. That drives me nuts too. Every time I open a cabinet door my pots and pans slide right out onto the floor. And keeping my marbles from rolling out of the cabinets drives me crazy. If only my cabinets had a faceframe lip my life would be so much easier!

"If the cabinet is level, stuff doesn't roll out."

DOH... Why didn't I think of that?!?!
