Here is a cherry bowl I finished for a lady that came to visit her mother where my wife works. My wife told her I turned wood so she came across the street and picked out this cherry bowl. She wanted one for the table as a candy dish for her grandkids. I told her I would have to use lacquer to get it finished by this evening. She said fine. It is 7" across and 2 1/2" tall. Like I said 8 coats of Deft lacquer. She was really excited and loved it. She said it was prettier than she thought it would be and wanted "made in Kansas" on the bottom. So what a weekend to be back and turning again.

Very nice Bernie. That will look good full of M&M's. I really have trouble with the Deft and it's not the finishes fault. Looks like you have the technique nailed.

Beautiful bowl Bernie! Congrats on the sale!

Happy to hear you are back in the shop! Hope this means you are close to being 100% again! I also figure that you finally got to use your new 3M. How did you like it?

Bernie,
Glad you did not suffer any serious problems with your exposure to dust and that you are back turning! Funny how we take things for granted until they bite us-I will be wearing my Triton more often even though I find it heavy and cumbersome but I made the choice and am stuck with it!
The bowl looks stunning and the lady sure is lucky she got it!
Best regards,
Wayne

Thanks to all for the kind comments.

Ted deft is one of the easiest finishes for me.

Steve, yes it really felt quite nice. I will not be in the shop doing any woodworking at all without it.

Wayne you are right. We just think we will only be sanding for a minute but it does bite you for sure.

Nice looking Bernie.

That lacquer sure does make a glossy finish.

Very nice work, Bernie! Glad to hear you are back at it. I have not used Deft spray lacquer on turnings, but this piece sure gives me the urge to give it a try!

Nice bowl Bernie. I like the form and the finish is great. I
ve use Deft on Christmas ornaments, and like it, but have not tried on bowls yet. After seing yours, I think I must!

Congrats on your sale, Bernie. As others have said, that is an awesome finish on a great looking bowl.

Thanks again. I think with the spray lacquer the key is light coats. It does have 8 coats and that seems like a lot but they are light coats. I didn't buff this one as it was to soon after finishing to give it a go but it had enough shine it didn't need it. I have another cherry bowl (candy dish) that I experimented with. I soaked it in AO and am in the process of using a spray poly top coat sanded with 600 inbetwen coats. It is looking as good if not better than this one.

So do you spray Deft? Do you thin it? I thought it wasn't supposed to be sprayed.

Jon this is the rattle can spray lacquer. I also have brushing lacquer that I use.

Good looking bowl Bernie! Wow, 8 coats of deft, it must look like glass in person.

Thanks. Curt it does have a glass look to it. She wanted shiney so she got it. It really isn't that thick but sure does look it. Like I said they were really thin coats.

Bernie, I love the simple style of the bowl and the shine is unbelieveable.

Thanks Pete. I am going to probably use that finish for all like coin, candy dishes, etc. Really came out nice.

Nice bowl and the finish looks great! Tried the deft spray lacquer on a vase and got a slight orange peel look. Will have to give it another shot.
