here's how i solved my issue in wanting to do some reverse sanding...

used one of these rubber pads made for putting in a drill

mount it in the drill, and push against handwheel..

worked good for me. of couse sanding became a one handed operation.

maybe if i can get my kid to learn speed control, he can run the drill..hehehe

now that being said, would this be harming the motor in any way?
i kept the speed below 500 rpm, i'd estimate.

thanks.

Yeah, I thought that standing on the other side of the lathe would be the easy thing to do.

??? how's that gonna get the bowl to spin in the opposite direction?

Seems to me that taking the belts loose would eliminate any possibility of harm to the motor, and make less work for the drill.

Is the drill that you use for sanding reversible?

Just mount the bowl on the handwheel side.

Is reverse sanding how you make something thicker and coarser?

there actually is an easier way to do that when u dont have reverse...buy or make a hand sander (inertia i think it what its called ) when u use these by slightly twisting it backwards or forwards u can make it go either direction...it actually works well once u get the hang of it ...i used one for a long time b4 i got my nova lathe with reverse..there pretty cheap to make with a set of rollerblade wheels

scott most use reverse for removing scratches and marks on the wood and also is handy getting at tear out grain

I thought maybe somebody had invented a new technology. I need someone to invent reverse sawing so I can undo it when I cut the board too short.

They do. It's called tight bond LOL.Or you can just turn it over. It's only short on one end:eek:.
