I started out turning this chunk of oak root ball into a hollowform. Then I screwed up and exploded the opening while hollowing it. It was nice wood so I decided to try to save it somehow. I glued a walnut ring in it and then a piece of endgrain oak on to that for the top. And it has a void in the side where there was an indentation in the root. It's kind of a weird shape and the wood doesn't match very well but I kind of liked it anyway. So I posted it to see what you guys think. It's 5" tall by 5.5 "wide.

Curt,

The piece has a lot of character and I like it.

Great save!

I just scored a couple oak burls yesterday and have been staring at em waiting for the best orientation to jump out at me!

My wife has agreed to teach me how to use her camera and up load to the computer so hopefully I'll be able to show some of my work and get some feedback!

Another beauty Curt! Thanks for showing the benefits of creative thinking and what can be done to revive a potential goner!

I really like that, great character in the wood and the walnut sets it off well.

Actually, I think the woods go together quite well, and serve to emphasis the burl. Good call on going end grain with the top, as I don't think it would have looked near as good long grain. Works very well, and the burl certainly is a nice chunk of wood.

The more I look at it the more I like the color combinations. I would have to agree with John, if it was all burl or burl above the walnut ring, I don't think this piece would be near as interesting. I like the form of this one with the woods, seems to really make the burl stand out.

I like it a lot. Good save Curt. End grain oak is very attractive.

Very nicely done Curt. I agree with the concensus here, I don't think it's a mismatch at all. And by the way, you didn't have a blow up, you had a catastrophic success.

Really a nice piece Curt. I really like the woods and the end grain on the top really sets it off.

What's not to like? The colors and grain compliment one another quite well. And to think that something so pleasing is the result of a...... mistake?
Great save

Curt, The woods complement each other and the subtleness of the walnut ring between the oak is very nice. It connects the dark of the base into the neck. It looks like a rich carmel, chocolate creation! I have a big sweet tooth so everything reminds me of sweets!!

Nice,

Jeff
