I like to use my ipod while I'm mowing and working in the yard. I've been trying to find something other than my ear pieces with my elcheapo hearing protection over them. Not real comfortable with my sun glasses on as well and I don't want the ipod to have to be turned all the way up to block out the background noise.

I bought some Sony noise cancelling headphones that work decent with the mower but TOTALLY FREAK OUT with the weed eater noise. That is certainly not the answer! Does anyone use anything that works well for these type situations?

TIA,

Terry

I use these on stage and now in the shop. Expensive but very well worth it, imho. Especially if you subject yourself to high db's on a regular basis.

Try a set of these (http://www.ruralking.com/aero-safety-work-tunes-digital-radio-headset.html?cvsfa=1908&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=303030353830383839), your Ipod will plug right in.http://media.ruralking.com/image.php?sku=000580889&nsize=300

Very interesting Rob. Thanks for the link. I never thought of something like this.

Lee,

Do you have these? I had seen them before but wondered if they were heavy?? They say "lightweight" but nothing further. Not sure what they mean by "lightweight?".

I have the Sony RF Headset that works to a few hundred feet from my shop. I use it out on the deck doing sanding. I took a second headset and installed the speakers in a pair of high quality Ear Muffs.... Much Quieter and cordless... I run Sirius Internet Radio off the laptop in the shop.

I was a Sony Service Tech and fixed them at one time so I knew the tricks to take it apart without breaking the circuit boards.

No, but I'm thinking about it. I have a regular pair of Peltors that I wear on the lawn mower with my ear buds inside when I mow the grass so I can hear my tunes...

You can also have custom molded ear buds made that incorporate the head phones they will block out unwanted noise while allowing you to listen to your ipod. I have a similar set made for hunting that amplify sound while blocking out background noise.

I've had a set of peltors for years. They're great and no not heavy at all to me and I would wear them all day. My only regret is they don't have the 3mm tip and ring jack so I can plug the mp3 player in - wasn't available at the time.

I can vouch for this brand of headphone as well. A couple of years ago my wife transitioned to an office that was located just above a machine shop and the noise was driving her crazy while she tried to work. So I got her the ER6i headphones and she says they work great. http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er6i.aspx I've tried them a couple of times and they really do muffle out everything else while pushing in some pretty good sound.

Like Rob said, they're not cheap but they do the job they're designed for, and it's nice not having a huge apparatus on your head like most noise canceling headphones are, especially in the hot summer outside.

I've got some of the AO Safety Blockade ear buds but don't have enough time on them yet to really recommend them. They don't sound as good as the regular ear buds I have but considering how easy the cord gets snagged on levers on the tractor, tree branches, etc. I hated wearing a $100 pair out there even thought wearing them with muffs over worked well. As ear plugs, they are about the same as a standard ear plug of that configuration which is fine for me. Woot.com had the Blockades for something like $15/pair last year.

These really interest me. I'll check into it more. Would not mind spending that much if they do what I need them to do.

Terry, I bought the Bose several years ago because of all the plane travel I was doing. It turns out that they work very well for the shop and yard work too. I bought a pair of Logitech NC phones as a backup. They worked almost as well as the Bose but were not very well made – the joint between the headband & ear cup broke rendering them useless. I need to epoxy them back together…

I have a set that I like a lot. I use them in my session work, church worship music, and recording work. They are only $699 per pair and have triple drivers with custom ear molds.....made by Shure for professional musicians.

But...you can get these (http://store.shure.com/store/shure/en_US/pd/productID.105460100) for as little as $499.00. :D

I just use regular Peltor headset for outside work. My neighbors don't like my singing when it's mixed in with the sound of the lawn mower and weedeater. :D

Most of the headsets you use at a NASCAR race will do this... I have some I picked up on ebay and they work great.
