I was given a burl and I am 99% sure that it is black spruce. It have been debarked. I am wondering if it turn well and if it is worth messing around with.

It is about 14"

Black spruce up here have some big burls on them.

Thanks

Quinn

I have not turned any spruce but certainly would if I had spruce burl! It does not grow down here.

I'd give it a spin. I've turned aspen burl, and it's one of my favorites. Not sure whether it's a cousin to the spruce or not.

I will give it a try I have nothing to loose. With the texture of the bowl it should make an interesting NE bowl or winged bowl.

Botanically they are not related.

We have a ton of aspen around here. I will have to keep an eye out for aspen burls.

Black ash as well.

Thanks

I recently turned 2 hollow forms from spruce burls that I was told came from Maine. I'd love to get some more of them! They turn very nicely and have very interesting grain patterns but the wood was very white, making the grain difficult to see from a distance. I went one step further with them and used blue, red and yellow dyes on them, in different sequences, and the grain really popped!
