Does anyone know what this wood might be? When it is fresh cut it is mustard yellow with wide grain. When it is dry it has a rust color. The tree was maybe 15" in diameter and about 30 feet tall.

I'm gonna guess Honey Locust, ( Honeylocust )

It appears to have a variety of bark, some with thorns, but the wood looks similar to that.

Jack, There are pretty much 2 woods that will be yellow then turn rust colored. Mulberry and Osage orange will do that, but by the bark and the grain it looks more like Mulberry to me.

Hope that helps,

Jeff

I looked at photos for Honey Locust but what I have doesnt really look like the photos I saw. Also I dont remember seeing any pods lying around on the ground. I have noticed one thing. When the wood if cut and left outside in the sun for just a few hours it turns rusty color but if left in the garage it will stay musatard yellow.

mulberry or osage, it will surely be beautiful...and when it's finished, then darkens a bit, wow!

Hey Jack, Would you mind posting or sending me more pictures specifically of the bark, I have some wood that may be the same thing, the bark looks identical, but the wood itself is more of a yellow green. Thanks Buddy

I do think it is not Osage, but yes Mulberry.
The only other I know that's a yellow green is Black Locust, but has different bark.
I'm quite sure it is Mulberry.

Same here. I have a bowl roughout in the basement that has the same color. The blank was picked up at a Woodturning club raffle an the donator stated that it was Mulberry.

I agree with mulberry. Looks just like some stuff I had turned a month ago.

Thanks for everyones help. I guess we will say it is Mulberry :). When I first seen the wood I thought it was Osage but when I picked it up it seemed to light in weight so I was stumped after that. At least I didnt cut up a posionous tree :D.

Leo, I looked at your post on the UFO made from Mulberry. Very cool project. Now I know what my mulberry should look like after I turn it. Is Mulberry good for turning?

Jack yes Mulberry turns just fine and you can get a very nice finish on it, ............ however it does like to split (fruitwood) so make sure you seal your blanks and I bag the roughouts to slow down the drying.
I like the looks of Mulberry, with a good finish you have chatoyance very often especially if there's some figure in the wood, have fun and take care ;-))
