Yesterday I decided to start on a handle for my old Disston, and after a few hours I had a healthy start. This morning I made my way back out the the shop and finished it up... The whole thing would have gone a lot easier if I had a larger saw then my dovetail saw to cut the kerf. Instead I used a combination of DT saw, bow saw, hack saw, and sandpaper to get the kerf cut.

Here are some pics, all it needs is a coat of wax in a day or 2 when the danish oil has fully cured.

Yup, I ended up finding a beautiful piece of Curly hard maple for a steal. this saw belonged to my Great Great Grandfather. So I think it was time to show it a little respect. The plan sometime this comming month it to get a few saw kits from Wenzloff and sons and round out my collection with some nice maple handled saws.

Nice looking handle. I also have my great grandfather's saws plus some of my own. I haven't used a hand saw in years. Your handle makes me want to redo the saw I still have from when I was an apprentice 37 yrs ago. It's a Sears and Roebucks special. My instructor told me that you know you have a good hand saw when you can take the end of the blade and bend it back to the handle and it springs back to shape. I tried it on the job site the next day and the blade stayed bend. I kept the saw after that for laughs.

Very nice handle. The dark markings on the left side of the handle give it some extra character. Building some handles is on my list - just have to finish a few other things first.

My First Post. I found this forum while looking up info on vintage hand saws. I came acoss this site and it has been extremely helpful . I am a veteran of the knife forums, being a woodworker, I should feel right at home here.

This is a beautiful handle. I have had few of the Disston D-8 saws. I love the handle designs. You did an excellent job, especially for your first handle. Keep up the great work !

I used the old handle and free handed the end that is broken off, so no I do not have a template to share currently. If you are interested in having me trace the handle to the best of my ability and send you a copy of the tracing when I get back from vacation, just shoot me a PM and I would be happy to give that a try.
