I want to build a cabinet that will set on top of a ballast box under my lathe. The width of the opening is wider at the bottom than at the top just below the lathe bed rails. In order to maximize the space I am considering making individual stacking drawer units becoming gradually narrower as they stack. I'm not sure how to build the boxes without doubling the top and bottom of each unit (waste of wood). I would appreciate your ideas.

Well, this sounds interesting. You could build the bottom box like a frameless kitchen cabinet: two sides, top, bottom, and an attached back. For the layers above that, just leave off the bottom and use pocket screws to attach it to the box below it. Post some pics when you're done!
