I was asked by our local fitness center to design wood lockers. The only part I dont have figured out is the latches. They would like to let people use their own locks, but we dont want the lockers to get scarred from padlocks hitting the wood. I don't know of any way to protect them.

Has anyone done anything like this before? I appreciate the help.

A piece of guitar pick guard material under each lock location?

Unless you just absolutely have to use a pad lock, you might try a utility lock and just issue a key to individuals who use the locker. I googled "utility locks" and came up with a number of them to choose from. Just my 2 cents.

Or a little piece of formica. Same idea, but probably less expensive.

Formica, incidentally, fastens quite well with good ol' yellow glue.

Thanks for the help.

The lockers are for use only when a person is in the fitness center. They are not permanently assigned to specific person. The manager wanted no part of managing keys for the lockers. He would rather have people bring their own locks.

I like the idea of protection from formica or plastic on a guitar.

I had also thought of a magnet, but it might slam the lock against the locker at an unusal angle and still mark the wood.

If all locks had the rubber protector, my problem would be solved. It also might be solved when he sees my price for the lockers.
