Here is another woodcarving based on the designs of M. C. Escher. It is a small piece of "Metamorphose III" in which patterns morphed from one to the next about a dozen times. In this part the blocks (left) become a coastal village with a watchtower in the harbor. The watchtower becomes the rook in a chess game, the board emerging out of the water. This gives way to a simple pattern of squares near the end of Escher's original:
