I am building a cabinet that will be constructed of 2x4 cypress. Three sides(internally) will be luan(1/4"). Three external sides will be 1/4" cherry ply. Between will be 3" rigid foam insulation as this is a cabinet that will be cooled for wine storage.

The front will be solid cherry and needs to be 1 3/4" thick. There will be two glass doors(60" x 25" ea) and two raised panel doors that will be attached to this frame(raised panels at the top). The frame will fit against the 2x4. Since I dont want any screws or nails showing, what is the best way to attach it to the main frame of the cabinet? Also, I am in search of deas about putting some kind of bottom or legs on it. it will weigh about 300# empty and about 1600# when full.

Thanks,

Tim in Houston

Assuming you have structural members right behind the face frames as the front edge of your "sandwitch", I generally use a few biscuits for alignment purposes and just use glue to attach the face frame. You will break the wood before you break the glue once it's cured! BTW, this sounds like a very interesting project. Don't forget the Picture Police... :D

I'm thinking wheels will be a good option for the bottom, semi-concealed behind some trim. Even the white cylinder-style refridgerator wheels (replacement packs @ Ace Hardware) would be good.

Tim -

Interesting project. Jim suggestion about biscuits is the way to go. They will alignb the face frame with the carcass and be very secure when the whole thing is dry.

Have you considered heavy rubber wheels (wide ones) for mobilty. Todd's idea about refridgerator wheels behind a skirt is along the same lines. With that weight you want the CG as low as possible.

What sort of rack/frame for the wine will you use? Are you also making the doors?

Ted
