I finally got a chance to hook up the jointer motor we discussed in this thread:
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=13071

Results:

[1] It revolves at a few hundred RPMs -- I'm guessing, but it's slow enough so I can count the revolutions by eye.

[2] It makes lots and lots of sparks somewhere underneath the casing.

Reminders:

[1] The original question was whether this thing was wired for 110 or 220, as either is possible.

[2] This jointer is 50 years old and fell off a truck.

So, what say you electrical geniuses?

Is it wired wrong, or is it toast?

Generally as a rule, once a motor starts sparking, that is an indicator you have a problem with either the brushes or the armature.

Were I in your shoes, I would take the motor down to an electrical shop and have it checked out. It will take only a few minutes for them to have the problem located.
