I don't dowel often but I'm building a set of cabinets and figured that I'd just dowel them to make things easy. I watched a few videos on the dowelmax (http://www.youtube.com/user/criticalrabbit#p/u/7/kWnVaYM3T48) but cannot justify $400 on it. That somehow led me to the bridge-city drill guide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FifEKhFMMvg) but $500 seems like crazy money. I am sure each is well designed and well made but I'm a cheapskate and prefer home-built jigs.

I like the concept of establishing a 'reference' and working from it on the dowelmax and wondered if anyone has made a jig they are happy with? I've looked at some of the other 'cheap' commercial jigs but they don't seem to be well suited to drilling both the edge and face side of different boards with an offset.

After a bit of searching online, I think I've settled on this jig (http://www.cgallery.com/jpthien/dj.htm). I like that it slides and that I can use a drill shank to 'index' it forwards. I'll offset it for the face holes with a 1/4" hardboard shim. Best of all, I can build it with scraps.
