I want to buy a drill bit chuck for my Delta 46-460 which has a #2MT at both the head and tail stock. Can anyone suggest a decent drill chuck that won't break the bank? Keyless is preferred but I'm not opposed to one with a key. Thanks in advance. Rob

I bought one from HF and it works just fine. I don't think it was more than $15 for the chuck and 2mt adapter. I use it on my little HF metal lathe too and it if true and strong.

I have a Jacobs chuck that fits a 5/8" shaft. I got the #2 Morse Taper that goes with a Beal System from Woodcraft. I have a Shopsmith so I can use on both.

There are lots to chose from - just check out any retailer that sells accessories for lathes.

Here is PSI - just as an example: http://www.pennstateind.com/store/drill-chucks.html

I have been buying from this place http://www.cdcotools.com/

You order the MT shank/arbor separately to fit your lathe and the chuck you want. I have the keyless and the keyed versions, I have 8 of the keyed chucks and 3 of the keyless chucks. No problems and I think they are a better quality than Harbor Freight.

Keyless is fine for cordless drills, but would prefer keyed chuck for use on the lathe. To each his/her own.

Do the chuck MT's from PSI and CDC actually fit the 46-460? I have one from HF and the tang is too long and I have not cut it off yet. (See first attachment)

LMS stock short MT's that fit much better. (see second attachment) and this link: http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_search.php?critFast=mt+short+to

The third attachment is a comparison of the two side by side.

To get maximum use from the tail stock ram I would consider the short arbor or plan to cut many of the others off to get a better fit.

The ones from CDCO area little long in my tailstock but are fine in my headstock, but I do not have the Delta you have. To get shorter shanks/arbors you can go to The Little Machine Shop, they probably will have the shorter versions and also have the ones for a draw bar.

Question for the Delta Force. How hard was it to remove the factory live center from the tailstock the first time on the 46-460?

I ask because mine doesn't seem to want to come out from hand force and was reluctant to start whacking the tailstock wheel handle with a hammer.

Justin, I just fully retracted the quill with the handwheel and it popped right out.

Faithfully yours, and a proud member of Delta Force!!

I was afraid you would say that. Mine is simply not budging from hand alone (to include striking the handwheel handle with the base of my hand). I am afraid of damaging something if I take a soft hammer to it but I guess I have no choice.

Don't use a hammer! Have you used the knock out bar through the handwheel?

Yup, tried to. I could not find anything substantial to catch on/push against with the bar. Maybe I didn't have the quill retracted all the way when I tried it though. I'll make sure that it is retracted all the way with the bar and see if it makes a difference.

Get the Jacob Chuck from Harbor Frieght, they cost about $7 and work fine. I have six of them -- one for each of the drill bits I use most often. They are not something you use very often and therefore will last a long time. I have had mine for over a year -- no problems.

Update, went back and tried it again giving the handwheel handle a good whack with my hand and it popped loose this time. The factory live center has a whole in the bottom so there is nothing really to push against with the knockout bar.

I also have the one from Harbor Freight, can't find a bad thing to say about it and use it all the time.
