Interesting using the vinegar and steel wool ... I do like that look.

I played yesterday with shoe dye to see the effect it had on maple.

It looks good, Ron. I've used food coloring for pens in the past with good success. Maple really is a great wood for coloring.

Yes John, it's the Fiebing in Med Brown that was left over from the wife's need of changing a color on a purse or shoes or whatever.

At the last pen turner meeting Russ Fairfield brought a bunch of Big Leaf Maple blanks he cut up from his firewood pile and everyone got about 6 blanks. Most were nothing spectacular but still nice so I decided to see what would happen with the dye.

I sanded to 600grit and then swabbed it on the reel seat with the applicator. I then took a paper towel and wiped a lot of it off. Let it sit for a few minutes and took some 0000 steel wool and burnished it until I could see the pattern developing.

Last night I sanded it back to wood and re-applied the dye because I applied the CA without it being dry and it out-gassed and had a few bubbles. Will polish it up today to see how it looks but I think it's a keeper.

I have some really curly birch I'm going to try the dye on next.
