Turned wood on Primal Grill

I was watching Primal Grill with Steven Raichlen on PBS and he was serving on what looked like a turned wood plater with a little warp to it.Don't know what kind of wood.
I also noticed a smaller dark stained square wood dish on the table as well.
Anyone else notice turned pieces on cooking shows?

I watch a lot of the PBS Create channel and cooking shows are on all the time. I have noticed a lot of salt and pepper mills that have been made of different woods laminated together.
