Walnut and maple glued up into a block, then turned into a box with lid and finial. The finial was turned from a separate glue up of 16 pieces, and attached with a tenon. 2 3/4" diameter by 4 1/2" high. Antique oil finish. Comments and Critiques welcome.

Awesome job Ron.

I really like the proportions of everything.

that is the kind of stuff i like to play with also. I did a cedar bowl with a bunch of glue ups of bottle top blanks. I also plan on doing a glue up to make a bowl of 1 inch pen blanks.

but anyway that is slick..

i really don't know how you segmenters do it, just looks like waaaaay too much patience is needed.

Very nice, Ron. I have built them like that, but with the end grain on the sides. That is a great look with the end grain on top. It looks like you matched up the top and bottom just right.

Really cool effect! Amazed at how well the top matched the hollow form - especially since they were from 2 separate glue-ups! Very nice work!

Nice looking piece!

It really shows that you took your time gluing it up (especially to get the finial to match up like that).

Really cool effect! Amazed at how well the top matched the hollow form - especially since they were from 2 separate glue-ups! Very nice work!Steve there are three pieces the hollow form, the lid, and the finial. The hollow form and lid where turned from the same glue up, and the finial from another one. Thanks for the comment. Ron

Beautiful piece Ron. Guess I'd better put a big order of patience on the Christmas list if I wanna do that...Bill..

That's great! The alignment of everything makes it look like one solid, seamless piece. I'm in awe of the finished product, and what I would imagine was a lot of work to get there.

Very well done Ron. All of the proportions are perfect and the glue-up is definitely done well.

Ron...whew, I am worn out just looking at this piece - way too much work and too tedious for me. I am so impressed with the precision and planning that go into these pieces, and you did just a great job here. Aside from the segmentation, the piece is very well done on its own. Throw in the glue ups, and making it all come together, and you have a winner here!

John, you labeled it correctly. It's not so much patience as persistence. Lots of repetitive and tedious work before you finally get to turn something. Nice work Ron.

Ron,

Really a nice piece. The pieces line up well and the pattern in visually interesting. I really like it. I have been contemplating some "seg-mental" work and this may be a great starting point. Thanks for posting.

Very nice box. I haven't done boxes before. How did you make the pieces square?

Very clever to turn it end grain, it produces a great effect and lots of interesting details.
Nice job.

Very nice box. I haven't done boxes before. How did you make the pieces square?Michael, it is called flat work. I plained the boards to 1/4" thick then cut strips 5/16" wide, and glued 12 of them together to make some boards 3" x 1/4" x 13" long, then plained them to 1/4" thick. Then glued and cut until I had what I wanted. Thanks for all the nice comment. Ron

I don't believe I would ever have the patience to tackle something like this. Wow, you bulls-eyed this one for sure. Mesmerizing.
