If you were prepared to pay whatever was necessary for really great figured cherry to make a 72" x 42" dining table, where would you go? I obviously can't pay infinite amounts but will shell out more per bf than I've ever done before, and will travel from Kincardine Ontario to get it.

Any suggestions appreciated

Regards
Hans

Irion Lumber (http://www.irionlumber.com/) would be a consideration...

I typically buy figured from Hearne (http://www.hearnehardwoods.com), but the logistics for getting there and back are much better for me than Irion.

some times rare earth hardwoods at traverse city mi has some pretty cherry its a lot closer to ontario web sight is reh@rehhardwood.net
there web sight is hard to follow but sooner than later you will see cherry

my sister lives at traveres city there so i have passed buy there store but no experiance with dealing with them
if they have some thing you liked you could ship it to port huron there is a freight terminal that charges 25 dollars a pallet and they load and unload for you could pick it there
here in ontario the area around newberry bothwell etc has some realy large cherry trees if you can find a logging crew that deals in that area its possible that you might find some nice stuff lawrence

Hans,

Check out www.bellforestproducts.com (http://www.bellforestproducts.com). They're in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and often cary some very nice stuff. Give them a call and talk to them about what you want. They are very helpful. If they don't have in stock what you are looking for, they may be able to get it for you.

Good luck.

Archie

A number of years ago Jim Shaver from Oakville purchased some Cheery from a place in central PA and had it shipped via UPS to my house. He then drove his van down and picked it up at my house. I don't recall the name of the lumber yard, but the cherry was really nice. He is a member here at SMC, here's a link. (http://sawmillcreek.org/member.php?u=186) send him a PM or email.

Or try West Penn Hardwoods (http://www.westpennhardwoods.com/shop/catalog/Cherry.html). They will ship orders, but I'm not sure it that includes Canada, eh!

I have had some really amazing boards that I have gotten from a guy in Wolcott, NY, along Lake Ontario. It would be a drive, but his figured cherry is $5bf regularly or even less if you buy a lot of it. The boards that I got look just like his sample picture:

Hans... you might go over to the Woodworking Projects where I hang out. Go to page 2 and look for the name Carl Goff I believe and Cherry Side Table. Carl has posted several cherry projects over the months and the cherry he has gotten has been the most exceptional grain I have seen in 39 years of wood butchering.

Carl is in W. Virginia and gets his cherry from a local sawyer. I suggest you dig up his post in WWP and have a look at the quality. Then if interested.. PM or e-mail him for details on where and if the gentleman he buys from will ship.

Good luck with your treasure hunt!

Armstrong Millworks in Highland, MI may have some. They usually have some figured cherry priced higher per BF than the unfigured stuff. Dont know what they might have at the moment or how close they are to you in Ont. but you'd have to call them (248-887-1037). They dont have a website, dont take credit cards (but will take checks), but have a nice selection of domestic and exotics and usually reasonable prices and good wood.

Hans-
If yr willing to be patient, I'd call a few places, speak with the owners, and have them look out for you. If you negotiate a premium price up front, many will go out of their way to help.

I've never been to Irion, Tom. But I've heard a lot of very good things about them. What's nice is that the owner was very sought out for truly amazing reproduction work, so his appreciation for fine, premium wood stays with his lumber business. One of these days it would definitely be an excellent road trip to make!

Folks,
I'm blown away by the availability of great cherry (nothing that time, travel and $$$$ won't fix) - thanks to all for your suggestions. I was most impressed by the Hearn website. Fabulous selection and some of the pieces are nothing short of miraculous. Of course the prices match - $13,000 for one board!!!???
My sights are set significantly lower but there is a lot of wonderful wood to be had within my budget.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond
Hans
