now that I have a real bench I can sand in one place. but dragging the hose over the table is a bit of a pain. so I made a overhead pipe to plug the hose in. I used 2" pvc pipe. of course nothing fits right so I heated up the end with a hot air gun used a reamer to get the end larger then shoved the hose end in and let it cool. the male end of my shopvac hose broke so I needed to make the elbow larger to fit the hose in. I just heated it and used a spray can to make it larger.
I used the same swing arm I made for my cnc dc.
I am debating on running an extension cord to the inlet and zip tying the power cord to the hose. sorry the pictures are not great.

What a great idea Steve. I have been doing a whole lot of sanding on a rocker using a ROS with a shop vac The overhead idea would be really sweet. Do you get good suction from a shop vac for the distance?

I've been thinking about building something like this after seeing the Festool. But I would have never thought about building something as good looking as the one you built Steve. Great job!!!

Almost thought that was in my shop. I have pretty much the exact same system in my shop. Mine though, is used for routing large shapes from MDF.

so far suction is fine. at least for my festool sander.
yes this method would work for routers and such. but I would use 4" for those jobs.

Hmmm...I see you have spiders in your shop, too.

Very nice.

I carried that idea a bit farther and plumbed the entire shop w/ 2" PVC to a ClearVue cyclone and shop vac. Works great!

I did the same using the 2" OD whole house vacuum pipe into a Dust Deputy. It works very well for my hand-held router, ROS and plate joiner, so CFM seems to be maintained pretty well. However, static pressure seems diminished compared to simply using the hose.

I'm using a Fein Turbo vacuum. Jerry, I'd be interested in knowing what shop vac you're using for your central setup.

No main DC lines near my workbench, but I did something similar: Fein T III (auto-on feature), with a long Fein 1-1/2" hose (15'). I have an exension cord (custom length) zip-tied the length of the hose.

The hose + cord runs up and over, and hangs on a series of those red storage hooks screwed into the joists. The vac end of the hose hangs beside the Fein (for when I am using the vac as a shop vac). The ROS hangs on an overhead hook at the end of the hose, off to the side of the bench, attached to the hose + cord. I take the ROS off its hook, and the hose is now vertical (+/-) over my workbench, with enough slack to cover most things without the hose getting in the way. If I need more hose slack, I flip the hose + cord off of one more hook.

I can disconnect + unplug the ROS on those rare occasions when I fire up the belt sander.

Works like a charm. I am absolutely mystified why it took me 2 years to figure this out - no excuse. Sanding tends to be at the end of the day, with no "spinning blade" work left to do. The point is that before this, the hose dragging across the bench took out more Bass Ale or Shiraz or Pinot than I care to mention - but no more. [vintage cabernet does not go with sawdust - so don't even try that].

Sean,

I'm using an old Rigid vac I picked up 5 - 6 years ago, and exhausting directly to the outside with no filter on the vac. Plenty of power to keep everything neat and clean. First-time visitors to my shop all ask the same question: "Does anyone ever work in here?"

Nice!

I'm filing several things from this thread away for future reference . . .

* Overhead Hose above assembly/sanding table
* Extension cord run back to vacuum along hose for auto On/Off (I have the Fein II already)
* Cool webbing in support arm

Thanks for sharing
