Clamp design - ever make your own??

I have been looking for a way to replace the ridiculously heavy clamping system on my tenoning jig. The jig fence has a number of threaded holes in it, so I'd like to screw in threaded rods and use them as posts for a crossbar with screw handles, something like what box joint jigs have.

Any ideas along this line? Have you ever designed your own clamping system?
