My lathe just does not have the power to knock the corners off this small piece of sycamore.

Use your chainsaw or axe before mounting it.:)

Consider a diesel powered lathe. Am told they get good mileage.

Pretty much all over except the screaming! Post photos once it get it roughed out! I am assuming you are turning a vase, right?
