View Full Version : 4" knives in 6" jointer

I have 3 each 4" solid carbide knives that had been sharpened enough times that they would no longer fit safely in our 12" Powermatic planer. I had them cut into 4" pieces and had intended to use them in my 4" jointer (which I no longer have). I'd like to put the carbide knives in my Rockwell 6" jointer. Anyone see a problem doing this? I realize it'll limit my face planing a good bit but I can live with that. Should I set them to one end of the cutterhead or center them so as not to throw the cutterhead out of balance?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I'm thinking trade someone for 6", or sell them and use the proceeds to buy 6" knives. I for one won't experiment with knives spinning at 30,000 RPM. Others may give it a try, but I don't have enough "fuzz on the kiwis".

Goos luck with it... Ken

You can pick up 6" knives from Holbren for less than $20.

I like the idea. Its both risky and cheap.

I wonder if the jibs might bend in the area not backed by a knife.

Could a few bucks be worth what might happen if something goes wrong ???? Remember the risk vs reward rule applies here.

Well, you guys have convinced me. I'll probably just give the 4" knives to someone with a 4" jointer and by me a new set of 6" knives. It looked pretty good on paper, but a bad check looks good on paper too. :D

Thanks so much for all your responses.

I mentioned 30,000 rpm because I know a guy who works at a sawmill. They have a 1918 looking molder. One of the old hands claims the head goes 80,000 rpm,on BABBIT bearings!!! That ain't happening!!!!:)

I don't know what size (thickness and width) but I saw these on amazon yesterday.

Mine are 6x1x1/8 but for $9.56 and free shipping I thought about getting a couple of sets and cutting them off. Cheaper than sharpening.
