Egg stands 6.5in tall, hollowed to 3/16 wall thickness, made from spalted fire place wood and ebonized walnut for base (poor man ebony). Egg was donated to a charity auction.

Jeff - really cool idea and a nice variation to a traditional hollow form! Hope it does well at the auction! Would be interested to know what the winning bid was - just out of curiosity.

That looks great. I'd hate to meet up with the chicken that layed that thing.

SPLATED egg! brings up memories of Humpty Dumpty, and messy windshields.
Sorry, just couldn't help myself, nice job, and generous contribution.

Very nicely done and the donation very selfless. Should bring them a decent price, but you can't go wrong no matter what.

Thanks

Thank you all your for comments, I have not heard how much it sold for yet the auction was last night.

I hollowed the egg up from the bottom and glued the base on, next idea will be to use threading tools so i may screw on the base and see if it will sell as a pet urn.

Very nice Jeff. Do they come from spalted chickens ? :)

We missed you at the meeting Thursday. Later.

What is ebonized walnut? Is that a finish or something you do to the walnut?
Beautiful job by the way!

John

Yes John there are different ways to ebonized wood (a finish to blacken the wood) some mixes use rusted nails, steel wool, and mineral oil. I used Indian Ink & Mineral Oil seal it with seal coat, then lacquer it.

It sold for $87.50 at the charity auction. I guess it did ok, they are already asking for another turning for next year. Thank you all for your comments.

That's great. It's good for name recognition and a tax deduction to boot... Just get a receipt.
