Well,
I completed another project (subject for another thread) back in November and I closed the shop doors and had not been in the shop for over two or three months.

I am an active member on a car forum and a member there was in need of someone to do a little wood turning for him so I volunteered.

I don’t know if I am allowed to post links to other forums here or not but I guess if it is in violation a mod will edit it out of my post.

I am in the process of rebuilding the wood work on the front windows of my 100+ year old house.
Most of the trim I can do myself, but am in need of a wood lathe to make the last pieces. I do not want to buy a lathe for just 2 pieces.

I am willing to pay some-one to do them for me. I can send you the part that needs to be copied along with money.
I am sure that I would be able to find some-one local, but thought that I would try here first. I would rather pay somebody that I sort of know. and have your work permanatly on display for another 100 years.

This is what I need, it is about 29" long and about 5" in diameter, cut into quarters;

It took me a while to get out to the shop and get going on it, he said he was in no hurry and would not need it until spring soooo. You know how that goes.

I did this on my cheapo $150 HF 12/42 (Modified slightly)

I have been waiting for a friend of mine to come up the hill and weld up the ways for my home made lathe but he keeps flaking on me so I decided to make due with the smaller machine.
This is my second attempt at it, I tried doing it with a 4X4 redwood post and it was still wet and way out of balance so I scrapped it and started over.
I glued up the 1X pine blanks and mounted it to the lathe and got started turning.
My camera took a dump a few weeks ago so all I had was my blackberry to get pics.
First order of business was getting the stock round:

The old vs New :

And the first two beads are nearly done now..

Made a sled (jig) for it and zipped it through the band saw.

This is how it sits now and I will finish quartering it tomorrow morning and get it shipped out by noon.

Mark it is good to see you back. Do you still have your Concrete lathe? It was neat whatching that go from design to a working lathe.

Looks good. Any reason to get back into the shop is a good reason.

Great job. A little tip for you should this ever come up again: if you cut the stock first and spot glue it back together, then turn and separate it is much easier that cutting the round. Nice to see you back Bud!

Hey Mark,
It's great to see you back! Nice work on the architectural thingy. Hope you can get the "Mark's-Way" lathe up and spinning soon.

Yes Richard, Kirk,
I still have the Monster lathe and I have prodded my buddy with the welder to git up to my place and weld up the ways for me. I will just make a tail stock and banjo out of hardwood or have him weld something up for me. I have the itch to do some more woodworking and now that the weather is warming up I am more likely to get out there.

Thanks Bernie, glad to be back, I will try and remember to get back to the creek on a more regular basis. Maybee a little wood fiber in my diet will help make that happen  LOL

Thanks for the tip Gary, It was not all that difficult to make the sled to quarter it but I see what ya mean about quartering it prior to turning. I'll keep that in mind. Learnin every day :)

Yes Norm, yes it is! and Charles, yer absolutely right. I wish I could afford to heat the shop in the winter. I would likely spend a lot more time out there. But springtime is closing in and I want to build a workbench. I will be spending more time out there for sure....and here :D

Hey Mark, good to see you spinning wood again. I need to drop in over at NastyZ28. I still have the Camaro, but all my attention is focused on my Chevelle right now.

Nice work on this project - looks good!

Good to hear from you Mark, Selling the car was a mistake in retrospect, but what's done is done. yes there will be another muscle car in my future. I hope the Chevelle is coming along to you're liking.
Post pics at nasty and shoot me a link when ya get a chance, I would love to see it...:)

Nice work, Mark!!
A little tip for you should this ever come up again: if you cut the stock first and spot glue it back together, then turn and separate it is much easier that cutting the round. You can also glue it back together with brown paper in the middle, and separate it pretty easily.

Glad to see you back in the fray (whatever that is). I have turned a bunch of quartered/hexed/octed columns with paper glued and usually make sure the ends are screwed to bb ply so they don't blow. I had a 6' piece about 3" come apart at low rpm and there was a adrenaline rush to be sure. Good thing the ends were secure. (Do you think a 289 with a C4 will fit in a 59 Rambler American 2 dr. wag.?) Must be OT.

Thanks John,
I guess I am missing someting but how do ya glue the quartered pieces back together so that they seperate easily but still hold together well enough so they dont come apart on the lathe? Honestly it was not difficult to quarter it on the band saw after it was turned.

Paul, piece of cake buddy!! Why not go with a 302 though? aw heck put a 427 in it backed with a four speed!!
