I'm in the process of drilling my test holes for the 3/4" dogs i got from lee-valley for my bench. My #12 auger bit drills about a 32nd under 3/4" so the dog won't fit. My #13 bit drills is exactly 13/16th so it's a bit large.

Is extra slop with the #13 in the dog hole going to be a bad thing? can I get away with it?

In case it matters, the bench top is 2" thick. 2x lumber on side with 1/2 birch ply on top.

Thanks,
Mike

The real answer is in the question "how well does it hold?" That's all that is important.

I don't have the Lee-Valley holdfasts, but my experience with Gramercys is that on oversize hole is not a big problem.

Besides the obvious(like drilling a 13/16 hole in scrap and testing it yourself), you could always ask Lee Valley.:)

If your top is ply be sure to chamfer the top of the hole or it will break out the veneer. Since you are drilling test holes I would say drill them and test.

That is odd that your bit would drill the hole under size. Usually augers are a bit over size.

Is there a chance you can find another #12 auger to try? Could it be a metric sized auger?

As far as the dogs you have, you would have to answer that for yourself by drilling some test holes in scrap.

My bench came with 18mm dogs and holes. The dogs do not work well in a 3/4" hole.

I drilled the first row of Dogs late last night with my #13 and they work great. :D
