Well, I have been working on roughing out some Spalted maple bowls today and I got 6 blanks from a 3 ft. log. Two of the bowls are about 9" wide and 3 of them are about 6" wide and the last one is about 5" wide. I should have enough scraps left over to make at least 10 pens. What you think?

Those are going to be some great looking bowls when finished. Well done.

I had another log that I have been saving for about 2 years and I had it in the dry and cut into it today and noticed it was ruined.I waited too long for it.The spalting was way too soft for bowl turning so I thought it would still be good for something.,(Firewood). I love to spalt my own wood.I just have to keep in mind where I hid it all.

I haven't done any coring yet, waiting to buy the equipment, but I would assume you could have gotten several more bowls from your wood by using a coring system. Would you agree? With the price we have to pay for wood or the time we have to wait for wood to dry it seems to me that a McNaughton (sp) system would pay for itself with a couple of logs. BTW the bowls you have look great and my post is not in tended to be negative, just seeking more info before I invest in more tools.

I would love to have a coring system but it's probally a little costly.

Great looking wood, and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished bowls. I agree that you've got a few pens and stoppers in some of the leftovers.
