Mark Cothren brought me some spalted sweet gum when he came for his visit a couple of weeks ago. Thanks Mark ! This is the first piece I turned from it. Measures 5-1/2" dia. x 6-1/2" tall. Finished with brush on lacquer and buffed. All comments/critiques welcome.

really, really nice form! the spalted wood 'grain' being vertically oriented, complements the overall form of the vase - i think it's great!

SWEET Gum indeed! Very nice HF the spalting is spectacular, as is the form and finish. Well done.

Keith, the spalt lines on this piece really emphasis the form - just a beautiful piece! As always, your work is fantastic. Someday....... I hope to get just part way there!

Lovely. Tell me did you have any issues with tear out or chip out? Last piece of spalted gum I turned gave me some grief.

Looks great Keith! I did a tall birch vase that was spalted and had similar lines. I think the shape goes well with the spalt lines running vertically. Reminded me of something that just had the finish dripping off of it.

I agree with all that has been said. Cothren must be a pretty good guy to give away wood that looks like that!
