I came across this plane, which is a #5C plane. It appears to be a Stanley, but the only identification marks on it are on the lever cap, and the blade itself.

I am new to the whole plane scene, but it appears to be a well (ab)used bedrock #5, based on the frog.

The front knob is missing,

and the tote was busted up pretty good, so the one currently on it is a replacement. There is a forward adjuster screw, and the adjuster knob is the smaller variety.

The blade

Here is a picture of all the pieces, where the damage to the sides of the front is apparent.

The sole - the mouth is actually square and even despite what this picture shows

The plane cleaned up pretty nicely, and actually cut some nice shavings (no pics).

So, what do I have?

Thanks

Looks like a 605C to me. Other than the chips on the front/sides and the missing front tote, looks like a good user to me. Check out Rexmill.com on how to tune it up and make it part of your repertoire.

The lateral adjuster looks wrong for a Stanley. If it is a Stanley, it should have Stanley stamped into it.
The early Bedrocks did not have a ring around the knob mount. I am not sure, but I do not think there was a raised area with the screw mounted frogs.
There would also be a patent date cast behind the frog on the round top Bedrocks.

I am not sure about these details on planes Stanley made for Keen Kutter and Winchester.

Keen Kutter and Winchester bedrock types were made by Stanley btw. The Keen Kutters of this variety usually have a "K" designation, like "K-605" or whatnot. There was another hardware place that had some made like this but the name slips my mind.

I knew Stanley made for Keen Kutter, which was a brand of the Simmons Hardware Company, Winchester and others. I also knew they bought Union Plane Company. The twist on the lateral adjuster is how Union did theirs, but the disk was above the rivet on the one example that I owned. That is something that could have been changed over time.

Interesting, a look at Bob Kaune's site shows a Keen Kutter frog with the twisted lateral adjuster:

Thanks for the information - it does appear to have the body and frog of a Keen Kutter, perhaps with a replacement cap iron and blade. Just thought it strange there were no markings on the sole to speak of.

Thats got to be a Keen Kutter. Either someone filed the letters off of it or they rotted away. The only bed rock style frog that I know of with a twisted lateral is a keen kutter. I think the only two correct parts on the plane are the body and frog. Who cares, that should make an awesome user. My favorite #5 is an early 605 that someone filed the numbers off of.
