I think I like this one better than the others that I have done. Woods are purple heart, red oak, and maple. Measures 11'' wide by 8'' high with an antique oil finish. Thanks for looking.

Mike,
That's beautiful. I love the color combinations you chose. The form and finish are very nice too.

I am always in awe of the segmented work I see in this forum. The amount of work that must go into that boggles my mind. I don't know if I would ever be able to make one of these. If I got it to the point of putting it on the lathe, I'd be scared to death that I would mess it up and all the hard work would be for nothing. You must be a very confident turner to tackle something like this.

Nice job.

I like the color of the woods and the form. You did a great job gluing that up, too.

Just an excellent job of grain layout, glue up, and overall design. The form is fantastic.

I am not a big fan of the segmented work, though I agree that the work that goes into one of these is way beyond my abilities. Normally, when I see a segmented piece, it seems "busy", but I don't get that impression with this one. For the segmented pieces I have seen, this turning ranks as one of the best. Great work, Mike!

Mike,
Excellent Segmented Hollow Form. The design, layout, fit and finish are flawless. Of course, we expect this kind of work form you, but this piece is exceptional in my opinion.

Everything I've seen you post is really nice... This is no exception. Nice joinery, and I love the detail around the top with the compass points. I must admit I prefer your non-segmented forms, but this one is beautiful.

Nice work Mike. Fine alignment in the feature ring. Your purpleheart looks like padauk from here.

Mike, high marks all the way around! I've never seen "oak" look so good.

Yup...what they said...top notch, very well done.

The only issue, which may never be a problem with yours, is one I discovered the hard way. I turned a similar shape with some large segments on the top part, where the joints (like yours do) ran pretty close to horizontal. It looked great till winter came and humidity dropped, and those joints opened up, ruining the piece. I don't know if they were glue starved, or if it was the wood choice I made...mine was walnut. But it's something to think about.

Count me aw-struck. I can't imagine the work that went into that.

We just had a tutorial on segmented turning at our last club meeting and I now have a new appreciation at the amount of work and preciseness that goes into making one of these. This bowl is just beautiful. Really, really nice.

Very nice piece. I especially like the form's shape as it is accentuated by the rim art. The star points add interest and are well done as is the finish (makes you want to hold it). Also like how the light crenelations of the interior neck draw your eye and help highlight the hollow interior.

I've already commented on this piece to you elsewhere, Mike, but I'll say on here as well that it is some extremently fine craftsmanship and beautiful art.

Mike, You've got more patience than me :) I have done a few segmented pieces. Don't mind the finished item but the journey getting there is a bit long for me most days :D
Excellent piece, the glues lines are done very well and even. Good form and shape. All in all a darn fine composition
