Cane Stand Project Help

I am making a cane stand for my boss and would like to get everyone's opinion on what wood I should use? See pictures below and let me know...I was thinking of dovetailing the top boards into the sides...maybe contrasting woods... :rolleyes:

Any of the common hardwoods (Cherry, Oak, Maple, Walnut, Ash) would work well in that design. I wouldn't use any plywood, glue up the sides. Dovetailed joints would add a more craftsman touch.

It seems like a lot of space for canes. Does your boss have that many or are you sending him a large hint? :D
