I've had great success with local classified advertising outlets. They can take some effort to find. You'll need patience before the right equipment is offered. I've picked up a PM66, PM 15" planer, DJ15, Milwaukee SCMS and other tools at very good prices. Patience is a key. Good luck.

Try calling Berland's House of tools. They are a good source of new tools and may have a few reccomendations for buying used ones.

That is, are you looking for big stuff -- table saws, band saws, jointers, and the like -- or smaller stuff, like (presumably power) hand tools?

In my experience, companies which deal with used woodworking equipment have only industrial equipment. If you want an edgebander which is 40 feet long, they've got it!

I see more small-shop equipment offered by individuals in classified ads. Newspapers often have web sites with classifieds. I see there's a craigslist.org for Chicago; you might try it.

There is a franchise around in many areas of Illinois that is called Re-Tool. It is similar to Play-it-again Sports. Basically it buys used tools and resells them. I'm not sure where exactly you are at, but there is one out in the Rockford area and one in the Crystal Lake/McHenry area that I know of. Otherwise, I'm sure you can find them on the web and do a store locator search or something.

What are you looking for? We have one good place in the Twin Cities that although not online will deal with you over the phone; Tried and True Tools, Fridley, MN. Other than that you might try the Mini-Max, Laguna, Felder, and Hammer web sites as they will often have used tools on consignment from customers who are upgrading to Euro-combo machines.

Here's the way it works: You spend a year looking for something used and don't find a single decent thing. So, you pony up and buy one new. The very next weekend, there's guaranteed to be at least a few perfect used examples for sale for far less than you spent. :D

Check them out. While I haven't bought anything yet, I've sold a ton of stuff: table saw fences, various woodworking sundries, Delta planer, Makita sander, stereo, tv stand, garage door opener, etc. I've done surprisingly well have for the most part have gotten fair money for what I've sold.
