This three cornered box is all made from cherry. It stands 12 1/2" tall and 3 1/2" wide at the box. I asked for advice on whether to leave it all cherry or ebonize part of it. The general opinion was to leave it as is. Thanks for all the advice. The finish is 5 coats of antique oil.
Thanks Ron

And, I believe the consensus was on the money!! Ron, it really turned out looking great, and a couple years from now, it will look even better.

Ron, that is some piece of artwork. I can't believe how thin you got the center area. How think is is anyway?

Really beautiful Ron. If you don't mind me asking, how did you make the 3 cornered box?

Brian, The box is turned from a 3" cube, mounted between centers, on two opposite points of the cube.
The cube needs to be a perfect square, and centered exactly on the points. Ron

Do you flatten the point on one end, so that the drive center has something to bite into?

Do you flatten the point on one end, so that the drive center has something to bite into? Brian, I will try to explain. I sand both points the drive end more but just enough so does not slip. Next turn the outside from the points to the drive center where I make a tenon about 1/2" long and 1/2" dia. Using spigot jaws on the tenon and the tail stock to make sure it is lined up. Then remove the tail stock and turn the inside. Next I reversed the box using a jam chuck on the inside, and the tail stock on the bottom, to get the final shape of the outside of the bottom of the box, and to part it off. Then drill a 1/4" hole in the bottom for a tenon. The wood does need to be dry. Give it a try. Hope this helps. Ron

Thanks Ron, it does help. And I will definitely try it. The really tricky part will be finding the time - I've had very little so far this year. :(
