View Full Version : Need a fluting jig with a ramp

I'm in need of a fluting jig that can cut flutes that gradually rise up out of the piece instead of a flute that is the same depth throughout the whole flute. The flutes would have a bullet-like look to the end of them.

I was thinking of maybe adding some sort of ramp to the end of a regular fluting jig to make the router gradually rise up off the piece. Has anyone built a jig like this or can you refer me to a picture of a jig somewhere on the net.

Are you talking something like this:

See my thread here and in particular post #9; it shows my setup for doing the reeds (bu you can use the same to to flutes if you want).

Beautiful work, Mreza....How did you prevent burning? Happens to me if I fail to lift the bit in time.

I remember this article:

They also show a ramp.

Thanks for the help guys, I've got the idea's I need to build a jig now.

I just realized I didn't specify that I needed it for flat work but that is some really nice work Mreza. The concept seems to be the same as the jig for flat work that Jamie posted. Just make the router follow a contour to climb out of the work.

Paul:

If you go to LumberJocks.com, type in tapering fluting jig video in the search engine and a guy built a jig for making the type of fluting jig you are after. It looks very simple to build. The guy's name is Brian who did the video.
Hope I am not violating the rules by posting the link, if so Please forgive me.

Thanks Joe. You just have to be consistent in the feed, and do it in two
light passes. If there is a light burning you can clean it up with sanding.

Probably you have noticed that there is a piece on the base which has the same profile as the piece I want to route. That is the piece on which the router jig glides.
You can just use a straight profile to get a straight flute. That's what you see in the columns flutes. Basically, with this set-up you can get any profile you want (instead of the typical setup with the router in the vertical position).
