What is the most common size lumber you buy for your projects and to keep in the shop? Do you usually just glue up boards to make thicker ones? What is the prefered method? Thanks

I buy mostly 4/4 and then buy thicker stuff as needed. I do laminate stuff if I can't find the proper thickness when I need it but thats rare.

Rough cut 4/4 and 5/4 is most common, but I also use 8/4 material. This is whether I buy or it comes off my stock that is cut and dried on-property. I resaw for thinner material.

4/4 is the most common as I mostly do flat work. I will glue up boards to get wider, but I prefer not to laminate stuff up to get thicker if I can help it.

Virtually all my stock is 4/4 rough in quantity buys for stock. Any thicker is bought piece by piece for a particular project or laminated from existing stock depending on the specific application. Resaw for thinner.

Sort of depends on the project, no?
Mission stuff requires a lot of 5/4.
Maloof style rockers are 8/4.
That being said I do buy wood for stock if the pricing is good, knowing I'll be using it eventually.

I mostly keep a good supply of 4/4 but really like to get a nice stock of 5/4 stuff just to give a little more room to play with as far as dimensioning goes. Sometimes you can get 5/4 for the 4/4 price. My last pickup of cherry was this case. Half of it was 5/4 at 4/4 price. Most of the answers you're going to see is 4/4. Just about every project requires it. Then I'll buy what I need for 8/4 or thicker depending on the project. And I always have a few sheets of Birch plywood (A1, shop grade, and BB if I can find it) kicking around for jigs, cabinets, and sometimes for an easy panel for a project. Most other types of plywood I will buy for specific jobs.

Just about all my wood stash is 4/4. I do have some thicker material on hand because I liked the grain or I plan to use it for table legs. If a specific project requires thicker material for things like legs or even table tops I buy the thickness that I need.

4/4, 5/4 and 8/4 is most common for me. The ratios change with the projects lined up.

4/4, 5/4 and 8/4 rough. Although I'm buying more 12/4 rough and resaw my own lumber as needed on the bandsaw

Thanks for the info guys. I have to buy some lumber to have on hand and may need to go for a drive to get a good price on some white oak and cherry.

Mostly 8/4 and overthick 4/4. Where I buy, the overthick 4/4 (1-1/8" rough, 15/16" surfaced) is the same price or cheaper than regular 4/4.
