New Laser owner with questions

Hi all,
I just recieved my 30w explorer and I love it. Although I've found there is a large learning curve:eek: !
I was woundering if anyone has a spreed sheet etc. of settings for basic materials? I didn't get any docs with the laser, not even a printed owners manual! After six hours of setup and training there is still alot to learn.
If I had some basic starting points for materials it would be alot easier.

Also are there any other sites or forums I should be looking at?
Any where people share files etc.?

Hi Jerry;
Welcome to the wonderful world of lasers. There is a bit to learn but it comes faster and faster. Recommend you get a bound notebook and write down everything you try, settings, materials, etc.
Send me your email and I will send you a bunch of recommended power/speed settings for different materials. Also check www.laserprousa.com site and register to get into the support area-a lot of good info there.
I have a Mercury unit-60watts and have been using it about 18 months-still try new things every day. Good luck

Speeds and settings are very much a function of the laser tubes power , its ACTUAL power vs rated , the materials and what effect you want to achieve.
Mercury settings wont work on the explorer due to its speed increase.
We run 3x explorers and all of them actually require different settings for the same job , tho not THAT much different. However we use the same settings for all , sort of averaging it out. What you need to do as well , is check how power drops off over the table , take a piece of perspex , engrave and cut it at the top right , top left , middle and bottom l & R of the table
Make sure your top left settings JUST cut it thru , see what happens at all points on the table , then increase the setting so it cuts thru at the weakest point.
If your mirrors or lenses get dirty , settings will have to be changed and if , as all lasers do , the beam goes out of alignment in time , you have to change settings as well.

The explorer driver has some different modes that will affect the settings too , it's in the manual.
The manual is in pdf form on a cd with the machine ? Surely you got that?
I have a manual in PDF format , its 6.3mb - I can either attach it here or send it , I can also send my MER files , whch are the settings files , a good place to start from.
The idea in lasering anything is to get the most acceptable results in the shortest time , thus for engraving you might as well always start at 100% speed and vary power , for cutting , start at 100% power and vary speeds.
Start off with 500 dpi as a standard , a lot of materials , like wood etc can easily be engraved at 250 dpi with brilliant results and dropping DPI save a LOT of time.
Be aware that 600 or 300 dpi on the explorer is NOT a good option. Let the laser do the rest.
Apply all firmware updates and driver updates , I can also attach the firmware and driver files for you , firmware is ver 2.27c and 3.46b1 is the latest driver.
