About 3 years ago I help build a 16' canoe from a kit for a local fund raiser and we used this company's Abenaki canoe kit.

I have built several strippers from scratch and the kit we used was excellent quality with no shortcomings. We used a kit due to time constraints and I would not hesitate to use this company's products again.

Try this link. They have plans available and help in building. www.canoe-kayak.org (http://www.canoe-kayak.org)
Also, I have a book at my other place, written by one of the members of this org, (cant remember the name now, but last name starts with a g, that has about 10 or so plans included in the book, along with details on building. I'll start on a canoe this spring. Book cost about $10 used at amazon. If pressed I can spend the time to find the name/author, pm me and I'll research the book.

I built the Freedom 17' from Bear Mountain boats. I really like it. The plans were full size for the forms.
I recommend you pick up the book Canoecraft if you haven't already.

I have a book called building a strip canoe by gil gilpatrick. Great book. 8 different plans in all. A friend has built a couple from there. There is one in there called the puddle duck I believe that I would like to build.

Hope that helps.

visited a fellow that builds bow and plank canoes.very nice but the building of the form is very extensive. i want to build the strong back and forms because our pastor wants to build one also so i will be going with the strip design because of the relatively simple mold building.

do you leave the edges of the mold stations as cut or do you bevel them to conform to the shape of the canoe

I beveled my forms so that the strips lay flat on them. I suggest buying a Japanese Shinto rasp. It is good for that as well as shaping your stems as well. I have found it to be the ideal tool for a lot of shaping in general woodworking as well.
The coarse side hogs material off pretty fast and the smoother side doesn't take too much sanding to get rid of the marks.

Charles ...did you use a streight edge of some kind to blend t he forms?

No I just kept using a strip to test it until it would lay flat against the form.

That's funny Dan because the same thing happened to me several months ago. Tried to signup on the forum and said I had been banned. Hey, they can keep their forum for all I care.

I have been member of Bear Mountains forum for years. I have gotten a lot of helpful info there. Maybe it is some kind of automatic anti-spam gone wrong.

I have not beveled the forms. I did not see any problem with the strips contacting some of the forms on the edge.

There are multiple ways to do any of the steps, and ways to fix almost any error. It can be useful to look over more than one book, just to see different options. The Moores book is very clear, pretty, and detailed, but is the basis of Bear Mountain Boats. The Gilpatrick book aims for a simpler approach, as he has taught many hundreds of kids to build these. He describes how to cane the seats and make paddles, which the other books do not, and he worries less about some of the visual details. His book includes many plans, while you are expected to pay extra to build the Moores ones. I like the Minnesota Canoe Association plans. Their book is simpler and less detailed than the others, but it works well.

It is unfortunate that the Bear Mountain forum is so antisocial, the problem may be a computer bug of some sort. It is a good place to get answers to all sorts of canoe building questions from lots of people, many of whom have no association other than the forum. But you can get advice from many of the same people here.

Alan i've got the book by moores. good book but i'll get the one by gilpatric to get another view ov the project. being a simple person i appreciate simple solutions. i nwish the bear mountain site wasn't so snooty. i'll need answers to a lot of questions.
for instance is there a good way to load and fasten a canoe on a fifth wheel camper for a 70 yr old coot?

That's funny Dan because the same thing happened to me several months ago. Tried to signup on the forum and said I had been banned. Hey, they can keep their forum for all I care.

I tried to sign up using my Google mail account and was banned. I then tried it from another account and was accepted. I suspect you also have to be careful when typing in the confirmation code. If the letter looks to be capitalized put it in as an upper case letter. I didn't pay attention to this when I initially tried using the Google mail account. If this is actually the issue they're being very picky about registration protocols.

Ron
