Ditto on Rod's post -- with the Hammer or Felder, they are quick change and indexed so similar to Tersa, just different mount and very fast and easy to change. Both edges are sharp so each set gives you two blade changes. Work great in all the wood types I have worked with and most recently, some heavily figured Birdseye Maple....

I've owned three jointers, in 1986, a 1950s Sears 6" with straight knives. In 1990 I bought a new PM60 8" jointer with straight knives, In around 2001 I upgraded the head in the PM60 to a Tersa type head. I switched because I use a lot of figured wood and I was tired of time it took to change knives. My head was a Terminus but the system is the same as Tersa. I was never happy with the Terminus knives. They cut beautifully for short time, but I found they dulled much quicker than the bi-metal PM knives. In around 2005 I upgraded the Tersa type to a Byrd. Wow, for my use the Byrd is ideal. I liked the Byrd so much that when I upgraded the 8" PM to an old SCMI 12" I spent more than the jointer on a Byrd head for it.

I am a committed Byrd head fan. I've also added one to my PM Planer....joe

Straight HSS... double sided with a pin index so you just flip them without having to use a jig to adjust.

I have dispoz-a-blade in my 8". Except I MADE the bars that the blades mount on,from A2 steel. No magnets, but the blades click into them very accurately.

At first I was surprised at the number of straight knoves in use. Then I remembered all those fine older machines that are providing service to our little community ;-)

Seems the straight knives have it!

Tersa. 5 minute changes; never need alignment; can shift slightly in about 20 seconds if there is a nick; double sided; available in several different metal formulations.

The only downside is that they are amazingly sharp, so wearing gloves to keep from getting a nasty cut is a good idea! ;)

I have a 40 some year old Rockwell 6" jointer. I hated changing and adjusting the knives. I installed a Byrd head with new bearings and have been happy ever since.

Your poll is somewhat misleading. Irrespective of the type of cutter they all cut wood by shearing it.

While there may be an argument to be made there are cutters that provide a sideways shear and some that don't. I don't think anyone who knows about the different cutters would be confused anymore than they would be confused about the cutters they have.
