Van

It looks like your in the same decision making process I was in a couple of years ago. I posted on your jointer poll also.

I have the 20" Grizzly GO454Z with the spiral head. It really performs great. Again as I said with the 12" jointer, I don't see where I would need anything bigger but wouldn't want anything smaller. I can run most of my glued up door panels through the 20" planer which eliminates alot of the sanding I was having to do when I just had a 12 planer.

Wow Van you are on one today. Seems like you are building a second shop somewhere.

I have the Jet-208HH. Very rarely have I needed larger. When I do I just do the glueups after planing.

Grizzly GO454 with Byrd Shelix cutterhead. Also have DeWalt and Delta lunchbox planers with two knife cutterheads which have their place. (The Delta has really taken a beating and still works very well....good tool).

Newly acquired Shop Fox 20", 4-knife cutterhead.

But I owe everything to my trusty ol' Rockwell RC33, 13-1/8" planer. It has literally planed MILES of hardwood since I bought it barely used in 1985. If only it had jack screws for knife setting, I would rehab it completely and keep it for the rest of my woodworking days!

If only it had jack screws for knife setting, I would rehab it completely and keep it for the rest of my woodworking days!Delta DC-33 uses jack screws. My bet says that the two heads are interchanagable. Global Tooling list the same knives for DC-33, and RC-33. Someone over at OWWM could probably verify this. If Byrd makes a shelix to fit your machine, then most likely someone has an old head. I checked over at Holbern, and they sell a shelix to fit your machine ($895). Brian could probably tell you if has sold any, and to whom. Which means someone may have a head with jack screws laying around gathering dust. New replacement one is $549.

I have a Makita 2020 8-inch jointer and Rockwell RC-33 13-inch thickness planer. RC-33 was recently upgraded with Byrd Shelix head https://youtu.be/zFdcSKi47ZU
I bought these machines 35 years ago and rarely had a situation where a larger machine would be helpful.

FineWoodworking video tour of Michael Fortune 5500 square foot workshop gives some insights on machine size: https://youtu.be/pRnFHIyjBUA
This is a professional custom furniture workshop with some big machines collecting dust in the corner - Michael said they are very rarely used. Michael chooses a machine scaled to the workpiece. Beside his workbench is a 6 inch jointer, and he finds that for thin pieces of wood the smaller thickness planners do a better job than the big ones.

Don't put that old RC33 to rest yet, rehab and upgrade with a Byrd Shelix head. Do a through cleaning, lubrication, calibration, while you are at it. I did and now have a better 13 inch planer than can be bought new. Here are the video instructions https://youtu.be/zFdcSKi47ZU in the video description there is also a link to PDF file of instructions with text and pictures.
