I just read that shellac over oil based poly will increase luster. Is that true

Under the poly would seal the wood better and add depth... over poly will do little to make the poly look better.

IMHO poly is for floors, period.

Matthew,
My first thought was: Why?

My recommendation is to make a sample board. Take a piece of scrap material, sand it, coat it with poly, then coat half with shellac and see what *YOU* think.

Simple and easy,
Mike

Not true. If you want more luster and clarity, use a non-poly varnish. For further luster or sheen, rub out the varnish to a high gloss.
