Another vessel made from a chunk of very special spalted maple. I wish that I had more like it. The collar is Bolivian rosewood and holly. About 7 inches in dia.

This is a great hollow form, the wood is fantastic, as are your skills at presenting it.

What type of finish did you use? Most finishes I use seem to darken the wood too much.

Some of this wood is a bit soft as spalted wood often is. I applied one or two heavy coats of brush on Deft lacquer on the softer areas. After some careful sanding I put on several coats of Daly's Ben Matte Danish oil, polished in on the lathe.

I do most of my finishing on the lathe before parting the piece off. In order to do this I use a glue block on a lot of my turnings. When I was doing a lot more turning than I do these days, I would apply a coat of finish in a sort of production line...several pieces at a time, one after the other. It's a sort all day procedure. I remount and polish until the oil stops bleeding out. The result is a very good, long lasting finish.

Beautiful!!! Love the wood and the form. The rosewood and holly really compliment the piece with just the right contrast. I wish you had more of it as well, as this piece really turned out great!

Gorgeous chunk of wood and a very pleasing form. The collar is a nice touch as well, but I think that wood would look good with or without.

She's a beauty Wally. You are right, that is some special maple.

Taking a cue from you and a few others more experienced than I am, I've been using glue blocks a bunch lately, threaded directly on the lathe spindle (via a Beall tap). I guess that makes them faceplates, just without screws. Love the flexibility and ability to remove a piece and remount it without worrying if it is square to it's previous mounting in the chuck.

Also, I may be at the point of giving up my captured hollowing rig because I'm having so much fun hollowing by hand. Thank you for steering me in that direction.

You must be feeling somewhat better, at least I hope so.

I sure can see why you want more of that "special" Maple. I believe that is the prettiest Maple I have seen. You did the wood proud with your form. Beautiful HF...Bill...
