I keep seeing anvils for sale on Craigslist at prices that seem awfully high (I just saw a 400 pound one for $1200) Are they collectibles?

Having spent some time searching for a decent anvil, the answer is yes... Not really a collectable sort of thing, but rather that people are willing to pay well for certain older anvils that work better--Hay Buddens and Peterwrights, for example. Things like rebound are key. Today's chinese-made anvils just aren't as good.

I don't understand why anyone would have trouble finding an anvil. I've seen enough Warner Brothers cartoons to know no matter where you are, there's always an anvil handy.

And if I remember correctly, they often fall from the sky. :-)

The really rare ones are the flying anvils: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhQ4dE_RGnQ

I would love to have a good anvil but won't pay the price so I use an old piece of railroad track that works quite well for what I need an anvil for.
If I see an old 200 pound anvil at what I consider a fair price I will buy it if it is American made and in good condition.

Ya! And there's never a Road Runner around when you need one either!:D
