I had two blowouts in the same day.
One was a catch the other one got way to thin.
The projects here are not really anything i was just practicing.
Left is 5" tall by 6" wide right is 5 1/2 tall by 8" wide cherry.

Eric, when you need kindling it is easier to just split it out of the log!!;) Looks like you had some nice wood going there - that is a shame. But, if you didn't have those times, you wouldn't learn from them. Trust me, I have LOTS of learning experiences!! I have a degree from the "school of hard knocks" as my Dad used to say.

You having fun yet? Your tool control seems to be working pretty good! Now you just have to work on a depth gauge! It's only wood!

I have had the same result the last two times I used a tenon instead of a foot on the bottom. Getting a little gun shy. As they say "live and learn", I just seem to learn slower than most:o

See if you can see this as a good thing. You have this day out of the way. Look at it ans see if you can figure out why and how these things happened. Use the knowledge going forward. If the piece with the catch isn't destroyed (I can't tell from the picture) see if you can rework it into "something."
AND, as has already been said, get back on the horse.

You arent alone. That pot could be saved by glueing a contrasting bottom on it.

Don't sweat it. Get another piece of wood and some measuring devices. Have fun.
