I turn mostly bowls on my lathe, but spring turkey season always puts me in the mood to turn a few calls. This is a call I just made using some turkey tracks inlay a man gave me on another turning site. He makes inlay and came up with this for turkey call makers. It will be great for box calls as well. The other calls are made of bocote, dogwood, perssimon, maple, and poplar. The striker on the last pic is made from poplar even if it does look more like walnut.

Jack, won't be long before it will be time to romance those toms!!!:D Some nice looking calls, and I like the inlay - neat touch!! Can you tell much difference in the tone of the different woods?

Very nice work Jack! My wife and I went snowshoeing yesterday and jumped at least 6 turkeys roosting in the sun! Always fun to see something out in the woods!

Very nice work on the calls!

It looks like you have been busy! Similar to John's question, does the open bottom make a different sound than the closed bottom with a center hole? I have tried to call a turkey before, but just end up sneaking up on them most times.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. There is a little different sound from the calls with the opening in the bottom, but not much. The back side of these calls can be used which gives one a very different sound if needed. The wood makes the tone higher or lower with the softer woods being the lower tone. No two turkey's sound the same which helps hunters a great deal. One hunter said that he heard what he assumed was a hunter coming through the woods one day making the worst turkey sounds he had ever heard anyone make. It turned out to be an old hen turkey. Their a lot like us and each has their on voice.
Thanks Again,
Jack

Great calls Jack! Good luck this spring. It should be a good season here in VT, real mild winter so far, very little snow so far but looks like that might change this week. Again great looking calls.
