Good Day!
I have a benchtop router and I am looking for an extended shield for safety. I cannot find anything on-line and I am a bit suprised.
The little half moon does not do much when I am cutting longer tenons and exposing the blade.
I was thinking of building something with plexiglass that folded over the table with slits for push sticks. Any ideas? I have a coping sled.
I had an accident on Monday and I really do not want to give up woodworking. Blessed that all fingers are accounted for, but did get 41 stiches and a big piece of humble pie.
thanks,
Pat

The make of your table will help us respond better. I assume your coping sled does not use a miter bar. Even if it is fence guided you should be able to move your fence back 1/8" to a 1/4" at a time for multiple passes on your tenons with your hand well away from the cutters.
Your idea of making a guard is good. You will want a non-brittle plastic; I'll let those who know more comment on the type of plastic to useor avoid but I would think lexan or acrylic would be great. There's a simple guard idea here: http://www.woodsmithshop.com/download/201/routertableupgrades.pdf

Glenn:
It is a Bosch RA1131 table top with a 5" high fence.
My coping sled is miterless and leverages the fence. I could extend the guide on the coping sled, but my accident was not related to this.
My accident was more a problem with my "forgetter" and so this is why the plexiglass idea is stirring around.

Made a curtain fence (http://patwarner.com/images/rtf_opener.jpg). Curtain is continuous and adjsutable up/down.
Will keep your mitts out of harms way.

Pat: will this curtain adjust up until it is parallel with the table?
I had and issue as my apogee bit was 2" from fence when routing a long tenon for a door.
I think I will build a shield from 1/2" plexiglass with slits for push sticks.
Nice work by the way.
thanks, P. Britt

Will adjust upward & parallel to a max of 1.6".
