View Full Version : Removing finish from flooring

I acquired some cut-offs from a new hardwood floor that was just installed. I wanted to remove the finish and initially tried a chemical stripper that I purchased from a local home center. It had zero effect on the finish. A friend suggested that I just run them through my planer. It worked, but rapidly dulled the knives.

Anyone have any suggestions on removing the finish, or suggestions for a better chemical stripper.

Thanks.

IF the flooring is pre-finished with a catalyzed plastic coating, it is pretty much impervious to chemical strippers. Floors must usually be sanded for refinishing.

Evidently you have already started planing some of the flooring. So, finish the job! Planing will give a new fresh surface. Easier/Cleaner to sharpen and change out planer knives than to deal with the MESS of any stripper--caustic or user friendly!
