Like his, this is a simple bowl from some wonderful looking Cedar. I love the marbling effect. In my experience this is a pretty big piece of cedar.

11" x 2 1/2"

AO and buffed.

No cracking yet!

Toney, I prefer yours!! Beautiful wood, and I really like the rim detail with the slight ogee. Nice photo setup, too, with the dark background behind the red cedar - very nice!

Toney. thanks for being my faithful desktop image provider over the past few months.
Gentlemen, putting aside fine craftsmanship, Toney has probably the finest supply of woods. I'm green.

Beautiful in every way!

Exactly what kind of cedar is that? What they call western red cedar out here looks nothing like that, is more of a cream color.

Thank you for the kind comments.

Baxter, I normally only put 2 or maybe three coats on. IIRC it was two on this piece. I mostly use the AO to pop the grain. I don't want to build up any finish on the surface. I want to be able to feel the wood.

Dan, I don't really know the exact species. Around here they call it red cedar.

Curt, I think the cedar will stay pretty red as long as it does not get a lot of sunlight. It will age darker but I think it will still stayed red.

A bit late to reply...

Great bowl and really amazing color!!

Wish I was so lucky... I got a few chunks of Western Red Cedar today and was pretty excited about the color, hacked one in half and loved the reddish brown color, went and cut another and then looked at the first one... in half an hour it had gone from "pretty cool" to "kinda plain". Like Dan, living in the NW, I guess our WRC is be less exciting than yours.
