Anyone know a good source for industrial drum mixers? I need a couple and didn't realize how expensive they can be...

We're mixing fragrance oils. Basically, things with densities about the same as water, but on average about 10-20% more viscous. By day, I'm a perfumer.

I’ve seen some really nice stirrers at this festival. It might be worth a few phone calls to find out how they solved the problem.

Shawn,
I ran a couple of TV news motion picture labs and had to mix my own chemistry. The mixer that I used was made by PAKO a major manufacturer of photographic equipment. The mixer that I used was not a propeller type mixer that was mounted on the top of the tank but had a pump type mixer mounted at the base of the tank. The tank had a stand pipe in it that had several slots cut into it so the liquid would be pulled from all levels of the tank. The chemicals that I mixed were frequently like sugar but more soluble. I found it to be a very efficient mixing system that I used daily for fifteen years. The last time I purchased one of the mixers it cost around $800 and that was in the mid 80's. With the majority of film associated companies going out of business due to the move to digital photography there should be a good supply of used mixers available at a very good price.

Hi Shawn.

The first place I would look is a restaurant supply store that sells used equipment.

The second place is http://www.mcmaster.com/#drum-mixers/=5vyj7h

Got a hobby shop nearby?
Radio Controlled boat propellers make great stirrers. They come in bronze and plastic.

Shawn, The Bung Mounted one on page 493 of the catalog Ken noted would work well. We use these air motors at work and they work well.

If you dont want to insert a stirrer (contamination, product loss, splashing), you might try electric powered 20rpm Drum Rollers or Tumblers (http://www.morsemfgco.com/products/5154-Drum-Rollers.htm)
The link is a manufacturer.
