Is there anyone near Frederick Maryland that can help a new guy with turning? I also need some help looking at a bunch of down trees and seeing if its valuable or junk once the snow melts.

Thank you.

Kendall.
Allways take the wood:
1. it's good practice wood.
2. you never know whats inside
i take all wood and i buy fire wood that i turn some times the junk is the better wood after you cut in to it there is just know way to tell.

This was a squre plane block of wood i used to practice on i really did not expect to find it interesting at all.

Good luck

Kendall - highly suggest you get with your local turning club - they love teaching everything about turning!

There is an AAW chapter in Bethesda. Check their web site . Get it from AAW web site woodturners.org

Bethesda is a good ways down 270 from Frederick, but doable once in awhile probably. I'm in Chevy Chase, but hardly fit to be anyone's mentor as I just began turning last Fall. Good luck, Kendall.

Mark Supik conducts full-day turning classes at his professional woodshop business in downtown Baltimore. I just did a bowl turning class there and it was extremely helpful to my development as a new turner.

Looks like his next classes are the weekend of 3/14-15.

There are also 9-week beginning woodturning classes offered at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts but they are mid-term right now and MHCA is in Annapolis, which is probably farther than you want to drive. I thought I'd mention it in case someone else might find it useful.

This is also my first post here so *wave* to everyone.

It depends on how new you are. I am still learning a great deal myself, but I am up in Walksville. I have been teaching myself on an old sears lath I picked up at a yeard sale. send me an e-mail off line and I will give you the phone number.

2 possibilities. 1st, there is a turning guild based in Frederick, I believe their web site is mid Maryland turners. They meet at the Delaplane center for the arts, they could tell you for sure. Also, I live in Hagerstown, and would be willing to help. Pm me and we can talk.
