Moderators - reply display question

Maybe I need to change a setting locally but:

Why don't all of the posts on a subject appear one after the other? It seems sometimes they do and other times I have to go to the top window, find the "more replys" ladder entry and click on it to read additional posts.

What am I doing wrong or is that just the way it is?

Near the upper right corner look for the tab "Display Modes"... I select Linear, that way I get to read all replies in the order they were posted. I tend to hit "quick reply" quite often, and I imagine it links my reply to whomever owned the "quick reply" button, even if my reply was not to them... it is probably quite confusing looking in non-linear mode.
